Texas to restrict SNAP purchases of sugary drinks

DALLAS TEXAS (THEREVIEW)—
Starting April 1, Texans will no longer be allowed to use food stamps to buy sweetened beverages and candy.
According to Riddhi Bora at The Texas Tribune, Starting April 1, new Texas food stamp rules will prevent recipients from using benefits to buy sugary drinks and candy, affecting millions.
Senate Bill 379, part of the state’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, restricts purchases made through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
Abbott said the change is intended to promote healthier eating and improve access to nutritious food.
The measure drew bipartisan support, but some Democrats voiced concerns. Sen. Borris Miles of Houston said many communities lack access to healthy options. Sen. Nathan Johnson of Dallas said boosting SNAP benefits for fresh foods could better support nutrition and encourage stores to stock healthier items.
